Abstract The study aims to determine farmers motivation in certified shallot (Allium cepa L.) seed breeding in terms of physiological motivation variables, sociological motivations, and farmers self-actualization motivation which held at Ngudi Makmur Farmers Group, Parangtritis Village, Kretek District, Bantul Regency. This study used descriptive statistical methods with variable testing using a Likert scale conducted in November 2020 to July 2021. The selection of 38 respondents was done by simple random sampling and the data collection method was by means of interviews and questionnaires. The results of the study showed that the achievement of farmer motivation in certified shallot seed captivity was 64.89% with the Medium category in terms of physiological motivation achievement included in the Medium category (71.05%), sociological motivation included in the medium category (66.67%), and farmers' self-actualization motivation is in the medium category (57.29%). Based on the results of the study, an empowerment design was held through extension activities with the aim of increasing farmers' knowledge about the shallot seed certification procedure. The results of the extension to 17 respondents showed that the level of knowledge and insight of farmers about the procedures for applying for seed certification increased by 53.85%, or from 43.44% to 97.29%.
